Economy Drivers: Middle Stage Companies
August 21, 2003

Today's established middle-stage companies typically go unrecognized in a lemming-like excitement with the notion that start-up companies and venture capital are the secret behind economic growth. The truth is that established middle-market companies are much better poised to create sustainable jobs and wages, and should gain more attention in the business community.

Real economic influence lies in the middle market. The failure rate of start-ups far
outweighs the success rate of companies who have weathered numerous growth cycles. When given the opportunity to grow, an established middle-stage company provides the economy with jobs and wages that are created with a greater foundation and that will have a better chance to be sustained. To that end, we applaud Rollins College Crummer Graduate School of Business for founding its new Center for Entrepreneurism. The center will focus on helping business owners understand the key nuances required to move their companies to sustainability.

Successful business owners should be recognized. Proven entrepreneurs have had to sustain endless energy, new ideas, and a tireless commitment to move their companies from infancy to the current stage of success. From capital funding to municipal incentives to community-wide support, these businesses need to be recognized for their contribution to our economy and business community.

If your company, and any of your clients' companies, have demonstrated a level of sustainable growth with an annual revenue of $2-$50 million, a three-year growth trend, a vision to support future growth and an ability to overcome growth challenges, you should apply for Rollins College Crummer Graduate School of Business “2003 Distinguished Entrepreneur Award.”
