The PCE Florida Index™
April 27, 2004
Michael W. Poole - President, PCE Indexes
PCE is excited to announce the creation of the PCE Florida Index™ - a unique Florida-centric public company index. This endeavor, besides its distinctive qualities, marks our significant investment into the area of research of Florida's businesses and economic sectors. This undertaking was assisted by Professor J. Clay Singleton, Ph.D., CFA., of the Roy E. Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College and many of his MBA students over the past few years.
The PCE Florida Index™ :
-
Is the only performance measure of Florida's public companies,
-
Identifies economic sector trends of Florida's overall economy,
-
Is the closest proxy for the performance of Florida's privately-owned companies, and
-
Beat all indices by wide margins from 1999-2003 including the S&P, the Dow and Russell 2000.
The PCE Florida Index™ is a market value index of Florida-headquartered public companies with individual market values of less than $250 million and annual revenues greater than $500,000. The publicly held companies represented in the index currently consist of 199 companies making up 54% of the total number of publicly headquartered businesses operating in Florida. Florida is the 4 th largest economy in the United States.
Collectively, the companies measured in the PCE Florida Index™ provide an "at-a-glance" view of one of the most overlooked business segments of the state's economy. Just as the Dow provides insight into the nation's large cap companies, the PCE Florida Index™ provides focused insight into Florida's middle market companies.
The Data: Research by the PCE Florida Index™ is available from 1985, with daily research updates being published since April 16, 2004. For example, data compiled by PCE research shows that:
-
Companies in the PCE Florida Index™ created nearly $8 billion in new shareholder wealth from July 2003 to March 31, 2004.
-
In the first quarter of 2004 alone, companies in the PCE Florida Index™ created $1.8 billion in new shareholder wealth.
-
798 companies have qualified for inclusion in the index since 1985, with only 19 of those companies still measured as part of the index.
-
25 companies have 'graduated' out of the index since 1999.
When you visit our new website www.pceindexes.com you will be able to track the daily changes of the PCE Florida Index™. In addition, the Website contains analysis on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis, providing you tidbits of insight into its movements. We will be initiating a PCE Florida Index™ monthly e-newsletter, which will provide you a broader knowledge of the health of businesses in Florida.
The PCE Florida Index™ unveils a wealth of information that will provide business owners, business advisors, analysts and the financial market with historical and up-to-date context of the ever changing Florida business environment.
